It’s no exaggeration to say that Subaru is one of the most loved cars in the U.S. Many people will only replace their Subaru with another Subaru, affectionately referring to their vehicle as “the Sub.” They’re sturdy and comfortable, can handle the offload, and get great mileage – all at affordable prices. It’s no wonder families and adventurers have chosen them over and over for decades.
But both the company and some of their fans just got a rude awakening when Subaru suddenly recalled hundreds of thousands of cars from new owners and dealerships.
In an unexpected turn of events, the company realized that an alarming amount of their recent vehicles had been manufactured with a faulty crankcase ventilation valve, which could cause the car to lose power. Naturally, this means very bad news, ranging from alarming smoke to dangerous crashes or near misses. For reasons still unknown (or undisclosed), the engines were separating and causing damage to their surroundings and allowing oil to enter places where it shouldn’t, such as the combustion chamber.
The models affected by the recall are:
2018 Crosstrek SUVs
2017-2018 Impreza hatchbacks
2017-2018 Impreza Sedans
2019 Forester SUVs
2019 Ascent SUVs
Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid SUVs
The company will inspect all of the recalled vehicles, replacing parts where they’re needed – including free replacements for owners who need to bring the cars back. Subaru has already started the process of contacting the owners of these vehicles. But to date, they haven’t responded to questions about whether this faulty manufacturing has yet had any consequences.
With Subaru’s reputation for building trustworthy and timeless vehicles, they’re no doubt going to take this problematic period to heart and work double-time to ensure the same great product that their fans are used to for the future. In the meantime, it’s great to see a well-loved company hold up their reputation for taking responsibility when the time calls!
