Reddit user MihaM12 shared a story online about his father that many from a small town may be able to relate to. It’s funny yet infuriating at the same time, and while many people grew frustrated with what his grandfather did, Miha felt they ultimately deserved it. “Our property line is kinda like a square and it is surrounded by road from two sides,” he says, which is crucial information. Miha’s father was furious that people kept destroying the fence he had built to protect their property by zooming around the corner in their cars, so he decided to get his revenge…
Building The Wall
There’s nothing worse than having bad neighbors, and in this small Balkan village, that was definitely a problem. This story actually starts as far back as twenty years ago and it’s quite an interesting one.
It revolves around a man and his property, which was situated on the corner of two intersecting streets. The only issue was that the turn was too tight and cars kept crashing into his small fence. He was sick and tired of it…
A Small Town In Central Europe
Central Europe is quite a sprawling place and the area is lush and beautiful. While Europe is known for being quite an advanced continent, in many regards, a lot of the older parts of the country are still quite underdeveloped.
In most cases, the further you live from a major city, the more reliant you become on a car for mobility. This is how life was in this particular town in the Balkans…
A Small Road
In the case of Reddit user MihaM12, his family lived on the corner of a small road. In Europe, a lot of the older roads have been left undeveloped because of the fact that there simply isn’t space, and destroying the old buildings to help create more space would not be effective.
While you’d think that a small and narrow road would help to keep motorists slow, the truth was quite the opposite in reality.
Laying A Fence
As a result of the already small road that ran past his house, Miha’s dad decided to cut a corner on his property to ensure that the motorists would have an easier time making the turn if they needed to.
However, in order to ensure that his property was outlined and protected, he designed a simple fence which he placed in front of a row of trees in order to keep his property separated from the road.
A Sharp Right
Because of where the property was situated, the main road into the village formed a sharp right at the corner of Miha’s property.
While this normally would not be a problem, the main issue was the fact that the old road was simply too small to handle the speed at which the cars often traveled alongside it. Because of the fact that the cars often did not slow down, they would frequently crash into his little wall.
Risk Of Accident
While Miha and his father had gone through a lot to ensure that the corner they had readied for the street was as easily accessible as possible, the problem still seemed to keep occurring.
In fact, the corner itself had nothing to do with why the accidents were happening, but it would take the family a little while longer to realize why that was. Either way, despite his trying to make the road more accessible, the accidents kept happening…
A Close Neighbourhood
Culture in small eastern European countries is quite old-fashioned in many ways. A lot of the people who live in towns like this have grown up there their entire lives.
In most cases, a lot of the families there were descendants of people who had lived there for generations. Miha himself said that in his town in particular, most of the people there were somehow related to one another and that everyone in the village was very closely knit together. Talk about small-town mentality!
A Gravel Road
The road leading into the village was the only road in and out. Miha and his family lived at the end of this street, which was made largely out of gravel. For years, the villagers had talked about laying an asphalt road.
However, after a while, they seemed to all decide that it was up to Miha’s family to lay the asphalt road out – something that would simply cost way too much for them. So the road remained unfinished until today.
Lots Of Potholes
Gravel roads tend to develop potholes. When you live in a small town where the municipality practically doesn’t exist, it comes down to the local citizens to maintain things themselves.
Over the years, Miha’s parents had spent a lot of time doing their best to fill the potholes. However, as the potholes were eroded away, time and time again it came down to Miha’s family to fix it. It was as though none of the other villagers were willing to help…
While the family had considered laying asphalt earlier, the problem was that it simply cost too much. They had made attempts to try and garner funds or support from their fellow neighbors but to no avail.
So, as a result, the road was left unpaved for over 20 years. While Miha’s parents did their best to maintain it, the road itself was not the issue. It was in fact the attitude of the villagers that used it…
This all culminated one day when a truck carrying a huge load of firewood was traveling down the road. While you’d think that the huge load would somehow slow down the driver, he took the sharp corner at a high speed and ended up crashing directly into Miha’s family’s property.
As far as accidents were concerned, this one was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Miha’s family decided that they had to do something once and for all…
The main issue with all of the accidents that kept happening on Miha’s property was the fact that no one would claim responsibility for any of them.
At the end of the day, Miha and his father realized that there was little they could do about this. Because the villagers were simply passing directly by the property, there was no way to ensure that they could ever finger who was responsible. So the only thing Miha and his family could do was defend their property…
When Miha shared his story on Reddit, many people asked if he could show them a layout of the plan he had put together for the wall. According to him, the red rectangle was put in to represent where previous fence had stood before all of the chaos ensued.
It just goes to show how powerful of a tool online forums like Reddit are. You can really get a clear idea of virtually any situation. Which brings us to the wall…
Building A Wall
Miha’s father decided on a plan that would help to prevent the accidents from happening again in the future. He set off one day to a local building supply shop and bought all the things necessary for building a wall.
With the help of his son, the two set about constructing a low lying wall in front of their pre-existing fence. The wall was built at a right angle to ensure that it still offered enough space for cars to move, yet offered some protection…
A Policeman’s Revenge
Miha’s father, who was a policeman, did not believe in using violence as a means of revenge. Instead, he realized that the best way to get his revenge was by setting up a barrier to protect his own home.
There was no way that he could sit around all day, monitoring his property to catch whoever was causing the accidents, so instead, he felt that the best way to do so would be by means of a physical barrier. But that’s not the end of this story…
On top of that, Miha’s father decided to go an extra step. Worried that the wall would soon become damaged as well as a result of the continuous accidents, he decided to fill a series of plastic barrels with cement and rocks as an additional barrier.
This way, not only would the wall itself act as a barrier against the oncoming traffic, but the barrels would also help to keep the cars from getting too close in the first place, or so they thought…
After spending a weekend working on the wall with his father, they were both pretty happy with the final results. As the two decided to take a step back and admire their work, they shook hands to congratulate one another.
It wasn’t long before Miha and his father started getting a number of angry knocks on their door. It had seemed that in the first six hours after putting up the wall, three cars had already crashed into it. But that was just the start…
While Miha and his father were glad to know that the crazy motorists were already getting their just desserts, the anger didn’t abate. In fact, it only got worse and worse.
The local villagers did not like the idea that Miha and his father had taken a stand against their incessant accidents. They only saw this as a hazard to their vehicles. They received a number of threats from fellow villagers about the wall, and even more complaints. Apparently, eight cars had already been wrecked!
Since having built the wall, the number of incidents has slowly decreased. But in truth, Miha realized that one of the most obvious reasons for why his fellow villagers were driving like they were was because of the fact that they were most likely drinking regularly.
The reason for this, Miha suggests, is because of the fact that villagers in small towns are prone to drink a lot to pass the time. This likely inhibits their driving ability, leading to most of the accidents…
While the wall had certainly done something to help curb the number of accidents that had been happening on the property, the issue was indeed, still a recurring one.
Even though Miha’s father had clearly made his point about not allowing this to go on anymore, the road seemed to just be accident prone regardless of what he did. There was no way he could stop every car from crashing into his wall, but at least his property would be protected…
Tension Between Friends
While Miha and his father would often joke about the wall at the end of their property, the fact was that it had really started causing a lot of tension among the villagers.
While Miha and his father had no idea how else to prevent them from crashing into his property, the locals didn’t take kindly to the idea of constantly damaging their cars while trying to pass by. This was just small town mentality, Miha said…
Standing Your Ground
At the end of the day, the story about Miha’s father and their wall is really more about learning how to stand your ground. In life, we are faced with hurdles or obstacles in every aspect.
In truth, it has a lot to do with how you react to or overcome these challenges that really show who you are. Even if it’s something as small as taking a corner too soon, there are certain boundaries and barriers that need to be set…
A Strange Story
While we all admit that this is definitely a strange story, there’s a good moral at the end of it. Rather than finding a malevolent way to get back at his fellow villagers for constantly destroying his property, he understood that simply taking a stand to defend himself was the best kind of ‘revenge’ he could exact upon the reckless drivers.
While the problem was still an ongoing one, Miha’s family had finally made their stand. So what’s next?
Only Time Will Tell
While the problem seems to have slowed down since building the wall, Miha admits that he believes it will keep happening in future.
A lot of this has to do with the fact that the smalltown mentality of his village would likely keep the vindicative gene alive and well, he also figured that the quiet life was conducive to lazy driving and carelessness on the roads. Only time would tell whether the problem was really fixed or not.
They’re All Related!
What makes the story even more bizarre is the fact that most of the people who live in the area are actually related! “We live in a small private neighborhood, the neighbors are related to us more or less (distant relatives),” Miha wrote.
“Everybody here is a complete nutjob. They were constantly arguing over decades before me or my brother were even born.” So apparently, this village has been having issues for many generations, long before Miha was around!
Revenge Never Smelled So Good
Not only did Miha and his dad get revenge against their careless neighbors, they also had fun doing it in the process. According to Miha, his dad was so excited about the whole process that on one afternoon, he filled the entire area with cement and put some flowers on top of the wall.
His logic was that whenever one of the crazy neighbors would crash into the wall, they would smell the flowers straight after.
What Others Thought
Like any story that goes viral or is well received on Reddit, you can rest assured that many online users will have their thoughts on the matter.
Miha’s story was no different, with many people voicing their opinions, for better or for worse. One person wrote the following: “I’m very amused by the logic people go by. For example, if I intentionally hit your property and it damages my vehicle, it’s still your fault (the owner of the property).”
The wall situation wasn’t the only story that Miha shared with the world. Miha felt like it was worth mentioning the person who was arguably the strangest person in the entire neighborhood.
He decided to refer to him as “Jack” to cover up his true identity. A social recluse, Jack was known for having a short fuse and one day, he showed up at Miha’s home and threatened his father with a weapon. A truly troubled man.
