Live, Laugh, Love!
Inspirational messages can be good to have in your daily life. After all, sometimes, we need those affirmations and such to lift our spirits so we can get through the day. This might mean utilizing the “live, laugh, love” signs that have become so popular.
Though it’s a good message, we’re not sure that it really belongs on any walls or decorations within your home. Maybe just say it to yourself in front of the mirror and be okay with that!
Gray Accent Walls
The truth is, everybody can decorate their home the way they want. Some people have favorite colors, and that’s how they determine the color scheme of certain rooms within their homes. However, some colors will be better at standing the test of time than others.
A gray accent wall can always give a little depth to a room. But in the end, this will wind up being muddled and bland and definitely not stand up to the effects of time.
Black Painted Houses
Having your home stand out from everybody else’s is a big thing for some people. Many people do this by unique landscaping; others have recently opted to paint their homes black.
This may look chic now, but the upkeep will be pretty hard, and in the end, it’ll age poorly. We think this looks cool initially, but maybe they should have thought about long-term consequences.
Farmhouse Light Fixtures
Over the past decade, many people have utilized farmhouse ideas in their more modern homes. Of course, one of the most common is the farmhouse light fixtures. Those empty squares with the lights dangling in them or mounted on them seem a little cliché now.
They’re not always a bad idea, but the trend won’t play well as fads and interior design change in the coming years.
Microwaves and Kitchen Hoods
It’s always good to try to ensure you utilize the space you’re given, in any room in your home, to the fullest. That may be why many people thought utilizing the microwave in the kitchen hood combination was such a great idea.
It may well have been good in the beginning, but as time goes by, that microwave will age, and the overall aesthetic will take a hit.
Barn Doors
Another feature many people have taken from the farmhouse/ranch-style homes is the classic barn door. This can be utilized as the main room or a closet, but the truth is that it should probably not even be used anymore.
It may have started out as a unique idea but in the end, because so many people did it, it’s just become another fad. Maybe it’s okay if that goes with the rest of your decor, or maybe you should just put a real door on that door frame.
Wordy Décor
“Eat” or any other sign that says something like this should just be forgotten and left out of any type of interior design scheme. After all, we don’t need to be told what we need to do in rooms. It’s kind of obvious, especially when dealing with the kitchen.
Though you might think it’s fun and a little clever, it just winds up being pretty annoying. Because once you’ve started with one sign, that’s how the room’s interior has to continue being decorated.
Open Floor Plans
There are a lot of homes that have been constructed and decorated with an open floor plan. This may seem like a good idea, as it makes the area feel more spacious. But many things go wrong with this type of plan.
Not only are there echoes, but how do you know where one room starts and the other one ends? This could make decorating the rooms very challenging!
Subway Tiles
It’s cool if you want to find a way to set your home apart from others. We’re all for it if it dictates your style and thought process. But hopping on a trend just because you think you have to, is crazy!
One of those just might be the floor-to-ceiling subway tile look. Unless it’s the bathroom, it might be something to reconsider because we agree that using it will make every room feel like a bathroom!
Gray Vinyl Flooring
It’s always nice to have a good wood floor. But sometimes, it’s expensive to do, so people have resorted to using vinyl flooring. This vinyl flooring can be colored in a multitude of different colors, including gray, which may be a mistake to use.
The gray color, of course, has been pretty prominent in trends and all in different ways in interior design. This is boring and it’s going to be hard to maintain. On top of that, if you’re going to do wood, you might as well make it realistic!
Moroccan Tile Work
A lot of interior design ideas and fads come from other cultures in the world. When in Morocco, a lot of the establishments in homes have these wonderful tiles that have intricate mosaic designs in them.
We can understand why someone would want to recreate that, but only to a certain point. Maintaining and ensuring it works with the rest of the home is a different conversation.
Farmhouse Sinks
There are a lot of different aspects to consider when it comes to the overall interior design of a room. Maybe one room with the most to decide on is the kitchen. Everything from the sink to the stove has to work together.
If you’re someone who’s going for the more rustic look, then we’re sure that a farmhouse sink is on your list of to-dos. We definitely think you should reconsider because this may not play out well in the future.
Whitewashing Furniture
The big trend in the past couple of decades has been to repurpose old furniture. In order to do this, you have to do some work on it, and one of the things many people do is simply paint it white.
But white is challenging to keep clean and often leads to a more dirty look as the piece begins to age. So it’s probably best to go with a different idea so as to keep everything looking crisp and clean.
Linear Mosaic Tiles
Combining two trends can sometimes become a trend in and of itself. So, taking the subway tile idea and including a mosaic form of other options has created what people call linear mosaic tiling.
It might seem like a good idea now, but we’re sure that whoever opts for this will be unhappy in the future. After all, as trends change, they’ll want something new that might be challenging.
Brown Granite Countertops
There are many ways to accent your kitchen, from fixturing to the countertop material you choose to use in the construction. A lot of people like the granite look and one of the colors that seem to be the most popular is brown.
We don’t know why people like this color because it seems like it’d be hard to match with everything else. Choosing such a color, even though it’s neutral, means that they’re going to be limited if you’re someone who wants everything to go together cohesively.
White Farmhouse Exterior
When many people think of design trends, they often think of the house’s interior but design trends are on the exterior, as well. One of the biggest things in many areas is to have that farmhouse aesthetic outside and paint your house white.
But white exterior paint, like white interior walls, doesn’t stand up! We think white is a bad idea because it tracks everything and takes a lot of maintenance.
Painted Brick Walls
There are those people that love the exposed brick and those that don’t. Whether you do or don’t, it’s a design trend that’s pretty popular. On top of that, painting those exposed bricks makes many people feel that their home is a little edgy.
Painted breaks can be hard to maintain and isn’t a great look after a while. After all, paint chips — and if you choose white paint — it gets dirty.
Bold Wallpapers
Everyone has their own aesthetic style. Some people like a little more sleek and modern, while others like a bit of a bold flavor. Many of those who like bold aesthetics have tried to utilize wallpaper to accentuate their boldness.
But that can get kind of old kind of quick. Too many bold and flashy decor pieces, and suddenly your home looks a little like a trashy antique store.
Blue Counters With Gold Hardware
Though many go for a more natural-looking kitchen, some like a little bit more of a chic style. These individuals often go with colored cabinets and fixtures that match that color.
The blue counters and gold hardware look may seem appealing, at first. But eventually, they’ll get a little outdated, which means more renovation in your future.
Fake Wood Flooring
A classic look has a nice wood floor. But something that can be expensive to put in your home, yet so many people opt to go with, is fake wood flooring. The optimal word in that sentence is “fake.”
Often, the wood grain they use tends to change with age, leaving for some pretty interesting coloration of your floors.
Brass Faucets
Some people like that old-fashioned look, so many have begun opting for brass fixturing. It was very popular back in the ’80s and such, and it’s making a resurgence. If we’re honest, though, it’s not a great look!
Not only is it a lot to maintain, and you must constantly worry about corrosion, but it just looks a little tacky. It might work if you’re going for a very, very rustic look.
Cottagecore
You might say to yourself, “what the heck is cottagecore?” Basically, this is when someone takes their home and makes it look like a country cottage. This is very popular, especially with those who are a little bit more into life’s spiritual aspects and nature.
However, it can be hard to maintain and may not work with the overall aesthetic of the building you live in. Plus, who knows if this will be the same lifestyle you’re into in a couple of years? It’s better just to have a few cottagecore things rather than a whole house that you must redecorate.
Exposed Cement
Plenty of people out there like the more industrial look, and that’s how they want to decorate their homes. This is fine, but — in truth — the one aspect of this decoration style that should be reconsidered is the exposed cement look.
This is because not only are you exposing the foundation of your walls, columns, or whatever it is, but it may not always go with your aesthetic.
Boho Chic
Boho chic is not only a trend when it comes to clothing but also in interior design. This may seem very appealing for those who live a bit more of a bohemian lifestyle, as it goes with their inner spirit.
But if this isn’t who you really are and you’re just doing it because it’s a trend, it won’t play out well. In fact, it might get a little tiresome, and people will definitely notice it doesn’t match your aesthetic.
White Kitchens
The truth is, white anything is challenging to maintain over a long period of time. One white item is hard enough, but when you do a whole room in white, that becomes a destination for trouble. Just think of the messes you’ll have to clean up and the stains you’ll have to figure out how to get out!
Of all the rooms in your house, why would the kitchen be the one you choose to make white?! This just seems like you’re begging for a world of trouble.
Monochromatic Rooms
It’s always good to have a theme when you’re decorating a room, but basing it on a monochromatic color scale like gray can be very limiting. So, why people think this trend is something to hop on board with and keep reviving is beyond us.
Gray is such a drab color that doing a room in all gray may not give you the feeling you desire in those rooms. Instead of monochromatic, you can add some accent colors, which would definitely change things up a bit.
No Walls Between Rooms
Walls are intended to offer separation, which is why having no walls between certain rooms is quite challenging. Sure, it might seem like there’s more space, but you’ll have less privacy, and that may be something worth thinking about.
This is especially true when there’s no wall between the bedroom and bathroom. No one wants to have people watch them when they’re doing that!
Wine Décor
The truth is, we understand why people like to utilize little kitchen pieces of interior décor in order to show their whimsical side. But utilizing wine décor, like signs with wine in them or even wine bottles used in interesting ways, is a trend that we think doesn’t play well with age.
In truth, it just makes you look like maybe you have a little bit of a drinking problem, and that should be something you don’t make public!
Prefab Cabinets
Whenever you’re doing a remodel, you want things that will be cost and time-efficient. So a lot of people opt to utilize prefab cabinets in many styles, including the shaker style.
But these prefab cabinets will be in everybody’s houses, so they’ll never be unique to you alone. No matter what you do with them, maybe it’s just better to go the long haul and get your own custom cabinets.
Flipper Cabinets
Kitchen cabinets are always one of any kitchen’s most important interior design features. There are many different types of cabinets that you can choose from. One of the most popular, nowadays, is the flipper cabinets.
Though these can look pretty interesting when utilized in glass, or even frosted glass, they don’t seem to be something that’s going to stand the test of time. Why not just go with traditional doors? It’s always the best idea.
Bowl-Shaped Sinks
Many different features in a bathroom can make it aesthetically pleasing. From the tub and shower to the sink, these are all features that can be specialized to ensure you get the overall aesthetic you’re looking for.
But the above counter bowl-shaped sinks are a little too much. This is almost too reminiscent of a cottagecore idea that won’t always stand up to the revolving door of trending interior designs.
Two-Story Entryways
No matter what happens when someone comes into your home, the entryway is the first thing they’re going to see. Many people want to make it almost a grand entrance, so they utilize a more open floor plan.
We definitely agree that it seems to be a waste of space. After all, how much more living room could you have if you would just let the two-story entryway go?
Minimalistic Designs
A lot of people have been going for a more minimalist lifestyle. Because of this focus on stoicism and minimalism, many people often translate that into the interior of their homes. However, this gives such a clinical look that it’s not always welcoming.
Sure — it’s probably more cost-efficient because there’s less to worry about when it comes to decoration, but it also is less personal and doesn’t seem like it screams “home.”
Exposed Bulb Light Fixtures
A more deconstructed look can give a little rustic tinge to your interior design. There are many ways to do this, through metal installations and other things, but one of the most common is using exposed bulb light fixtures.
This trend, much like many others, just won’t stand up to the weight of time. On top of that, it seems maybe a little dangerous. After all, one or two adult beverages and a hot light bulb don’t seem like a good combination.
Waterfall Islands
In order to give yourself more space and remove the need for a dining room, many people opt for an island in their kitchens. One of the popular types currently utilized is waterfall islands, but maybe there needs to be some consideration before deciding this is your go-to option.
After all, if there’s ever a chance to renovate the kitchen, we agree with this designer that it’s going to be challenging to remove. So why not save yourself a little money, down the road, and go with another option?
Painted Arches
There are a lot of tricks you can use to give rooms more depth. Right now, one of the most trendy options is to paint arches and utilize mirrors in them, to give a sense that there’s extra space in a room. However, this trend doesn’t seem like it will have much longevity!
It doesn’t make sense to paint an archway in a room with no doorway. It might look good now, but that paint will fade, and then you’ll have to repaint it, and that’s just more work than necessary.
Glass Showers
It might seem very modern and sleek to install a glass shower. However, if you’re going this route, at least make sure there’s a lip to catch the water. Those ones that don’t have a lip are just accidents waiting to happen.
We understand why people do this, but in the end, it’ll be more of a headache. It’s not going to age well, and the water leaking from the shower will cause some problems down the road.
Tray Ceilings
We’re sure that tray ceilings are intended to make the homeowners feel like there’s more depth to a room. Giving a little more height can always add some dimension, but it isn’t really that great of a look!
That’s why we suggest opting against tray ceilings, as that may be something that doesn’t go well with upcoming trends coming down the pike.
Weird Light Fixtures
There are some people who really love modern art. This, coupled with a modern and sleek design, might appeal to modern art lovers, so we understand why these individuals gravitate to weird light fixtures in art installations.
However, if you look to change the room style, you’re going to have to change the fixture and, once again, that means more work. Why not go with something a little more elegant, so you don’t have so much work to do later?
Green Cabinets
Adding color to a room can be a great way to do an aesthetic without having to do too much when it comes to renovations. However, some colors need to be reconsidered when looking at longevity.
One of those is the green cabinets that are super popular in many homes, especially those looking to be a little more rustic. Don’t go with this, though. It may look good now, but it won’t look good forever!
Neon Signs
Modern looks sometimes incorporate neon lights and signs to add a pop of color and a little bit of atmosphere when the lights aren’t on. This may seem like a good idea — and maybe at some point, it was — but it won’t play out well in the long run.
This may be a personal choice, but we think that neon signs give off a “younger” vibe. As you mature, it may not be what you’re looking for anymore.
Fireplace Mounted TVs
When dealing with a small amount of space, you want to utilize every inch. Therefore, we can understand why having a fireplace with a mantle where you can mount your TV is a good idea.
However, in the long run, the heat from that fireplace may affect your television. Since televisions are so expensive, this may be something you want to reconsider adding to your interior design plan.
Beach-Themed Bathrooms
Everybody wants to spend some time at the beach. It’s relaxing and beautiful, and all those wonderful things. Therefore, we can understand why people look at that as an inspiration for rooms in their homes.
However, we think this isn’t a great option unless you’re at the beach. Especially when thinking about beach-themed bathrooms. It’s a little cliche and overdone. Try something new!
Decorative Vases With Reeds
Adding final touches to a room often includes adding little trinkets and vases. One of the most common trinkets is those decorative vases with reeds or sticks that tend to stand in corners, in random places in the room.
We’re not sure why this became a thing because, honestly, it doesn’t look that great. However, if you’re going to go with it, just know that it’s not going to last very long.
Just like with everything, interior design fads come and go. These may seem so amazing right now but may not play out very well in the future. In fact, many interior designers (and amateur ones as well) are pretty sick and tired of these and wish to go with something different. But the client is always right, right? We have compiled a list of interior design trends that’ll age poorly, according to internet users.
